Jovan Dragasevic (1836-1915)
Born in Pozarevac, in a poor worker’s family. He finished the Artillery School and was promoted to the first lieutenant in 1860. He was in service until 1888, when he retired, and he was made honorary general with the right to wear uniform in 1900. At that time, the Artillery School was at the level of the Military Academy, and he taught many military and social subjects for 23 years. He was a widely educated officer, founder of the Serbian military periodicals, creator and first chief of historical section of the Chief General Staff of the Military of the Kingdom of Serbia.
As a social worker and publicist, he created the magazine ‘Dardania’, wrote poems and due to his science work, he was accepted to the Serbian Clerk Society and appointed honorary member of the Serbian Royal Academy. He was also a member of European science societies. His private archive is located in the Military Archives. Due to his rich education and knowledge, he was also a Serbian language teacher to the heir to the throne, young prince Milan, while he was educated to be the Prince of Serbia.
